The Rex Cinema, North Street, Bristol
The Rex Cinema on North Street is a familiar site to most locals, mainly due to it's state of disrepair. It's not exactly a looker from the front, or indeed any side you choose to look at it!
Demolition has finally begun on the building, and it's days are now numbered. Having looked at this one a few times, we took advantage of the gaping hole that the builders have made, which takes you right into the main auditorium where the screen/stage area was. It is very stripped indeed, and was almost not really worth it, but it gave us a feel for what it was once like, prior to being stripped and emptied.
The asbestos people are in, and a lot of the place is covered in a think layer of sand/dust etc, so at times it was hard to establish exactly what the place would have looked like back in the day.
Nevertheless, here are the few photos I took, which will hopefully give you an idea of what hides behind the dirty facade that can be seen from the main street.
